Hey, my name is Steve McGuire. Join me on my journey of getting in shape at age 47.
When I was younger I got into playing basketball my cardiovascular was good I didn’t have a problem with running up and down the court. I wanted to get stronger to be able to jump higher. When I got 15 years old I started to work out at the local World Gym.
I was 17 years old I snapped the ACL in my left knee in half. At 18 I had a reconstruction of my ACL done. After going through physical therapy and getting the ok from the doctor I got back into the gym. This time it wasn’t to get ready for the basketball season. I decided to get into bodybuilding.
I got into really good shape. My knee was a lot more stable and felt more secure. At that time I was working out 6 days a week. I was on a highly intense bodybuilding program. This program worked extremely well.
Back in 2007, I threw my back out picking up our puppy bulldog. For 9 straight years, I was in extreme pain and could not work out at all. Finally, I got a spinal fusion done in December 2016. Since the surgery, I have not been in any back pain.
The recovery was very long and grueling. When I was mentally ready to get back into the gym in 2019 I got everything for shut down from the pandemic a few months back.
We got a family membership at the local YMCA a few months ago. I have been trying to see where my strength is at right now. Since I stopped working out 16 years ago because of my back I lost all of my strength and size.
I am not liking it one bit. I am feeling a bit robbed from where I was in my 30s. Because I am in my late 40s it is going to be harder to get back to where I was doing it all naturally.
Now that I am back I have started my own program based on the intense bodybuilding program I was on after my knee surgery. I can’t get to the gym 6 days a week religiously every single week. So I have tweaked it to fit my needs. I will go into depth about it in this blog post.
